About us

Handaxe Community Interest Company was founded in 2014 by David Coyle and Gary O’Reilly. We are a not-for-profit company dedicated to designing new tools to support child and adolescent mental health services. Our name, Handaxe, reflects the ways in which new tools evolve over time to complement existing skills. We aim to develop computer-based tools that complement traditional therapeutic approaches and also offer new opportunities for engaging with young people.

some_text David Coyle is a Computer Scientist and Lecturer at University College Dublin. He once did a PhD focusing on the design of technology to support adolescent mental health services. It was then that he first began thinking about the ways in which computer games and mobile apps could help to make adolescent services more engaging and more accessible.
some_text Gary O’Reilly is a Clinical Psychologist and Senior Lecturer in the Department of Psychology at University College Dublin, where he directs the doctoral program in Clinical Psychology. He is generally a very nice fellow, although he does support Liverpool FC. But then nobody’s perfect.
